How to Spend the Perfect Day on Italy’s Most Glamorous Island
Capri is one of those places that seems almost mythical before you visit.
Turquoise water sparkles beneath dramatic limestone cliffs.
Luxury yachts drift through hidden coves.
Bougainvillea spills over whitewashed buildings.
Designer boutiques share narrow streets with family-run cafés that have welcomed visitors for generations.
But beyond the glamour, Capri is an island with incredible natural beauty, fascinating history, and quieter corners waiting to be discovered.
Whether you’re arriving from Naples, Sorrento, or the Amalfi Coast, this guide will help you make the most of your time on one of Italy’s most iconic islands.

Why Visit Capri?
Capri has inspired artists, writers, and travelers for centuries.
While it’s famous for luxury shopping and celebrity sightings, the island’s greatest treasures are its natural landscapes.
You’ll find:
💙 Sea caves
🌊 Crystal-clear swimming spots
🌸 Scenic gardens
🥾 Panoramic walking trails
🍋 Lemon groves
If you venture beyond the busiest streets, you’ll discover a quieter, slower side of Capri that many visitors miss.
Getting to Capri
Most visitors arrive by ferry from:
- Naples (NAH-poh-lee)
- Sorrento (sohr-REN-toh)
- Amalfi (ah-MAHL-fee)
- Positano (poh-zee-TAH-noh)
My tip?
Book an early ferry so you can enjoy the island before the largest crowds arrive.
The Blue Grotto
Grotta Azzurra
Pronunciation:
GROHT-tah aht-TSOOR-rah
The Blue Grotto is Capri’s most famous attraction.
Sunlight reflects through an underwater opening, creating an electric blue glow that lights the cave from below.
Is It Worth It?
If sea conditions are calm and the wait isn’t too long, yes.
However, lines can sometimes stretch for hours during peak season.
If your time is limited, don’t feel like you’ve “failed” if you skip it. Capri has plenty of other unforgettable experiences.
Monte Solaro
Pronunciation:
MON-teh soh-LAH-roh
This is my favorite viewpoint on Capri.
Take the single-seat chairlift to the island’s highest point for breathtaking views of the Bay of Naples, the Faraglioni rock formations, and the Amalfi Coast.
Marina Piccola
Pronunciation:
mah-REE-nah pee-KOH-lah
A beautiful beach area perfect for:
🏖️ Swimming
☀️ Relaxing
📸 Photography
It also offers one of the best views of the Faraglioni.
Capri Town
Wander the elegant streets surrounding the Piazzetta.
You’ll find:
🛍️ Designer boutiques
🍋 Artisan limoncello shops
🍨 Gelato
☕ Charming cafés
Even if luxury shopping isn’t in your budget, people-watching here is half the fun.
Anacapri
Pronunciation:
ah-nah-KAH-pree
If Capri Town feels busy, head uphill to Anacapri.
It’s quieter, more residential, and offers a more relaxed atmosphere.
Don’t miss:
🌸 Villa San Michele
🚠 Monte Solaro chairlift
🛍️ Local artisan shops

Where to Eat
⭐ Sondra Recommends
If you’re staying for lunch, look for a family-run restaurant in Anacapri rather than one directly on the main square in Capri Town. The atmosphere is generally more relaxed, and it’s a wonderful way to experience a different side of the island.
Local Favorite
Da Gelsomina in Anacapri is beloved for its traditional Campanian cuisine, beautiful setting, and warm hospitality. It’s worth the short trip from the center if you have time.
Sondra’s Packing Tip
Bring comfortable walking shoes.
Capri is full of steep streets, staircases, and hills. Fashionable sandals may look great in photos, but supportive shoes will make your day much more enjoyable.
A reusable water bottle and sun protection are also essential during the warmer months.
Why I Love Capri
Capri has a reputation for luxury, but what stays with me isn’t the designer boutiques or glamorous yachts.
It’s the feeling of looking out over impossibly blue water from Monte Solaro.
It’s wandering quiet streets in Anacapri where life slows down.
It’s realizing that some of the island’s most beautiful moments happen when you step away from the busiest viewpoints.
Capri reminds me that even in Italy’s most famous destinations, there’s always a quieter story waiting to be discovered.
Italian Phrase of the Week
“Possiamo andare a piedi?”
Pronunciation:
pohs-SYAH-moh ahn-DAH-reh ah PYEH-dee
Meaning:
“Can we walk there?”
A perfect phrase for Capri, where many of the island’s best experiences are discovered on foot.
Wine of the Week
Biancolella d’Ischia DOC
Pronunciation:
bee-ahn-koh-LEHL-lah DEE-skee-ah
Although produced on the nearby island of Ischia, this refreshing white wine is a wonderful introduction to the wines of the Bay of Naples.
Flavor Notes:
🍋 Citrus
🍏 Green apple
🌼 White flowers
🌊 Salty minerality
Pairs Perfectly With:
🐟 Fresh seafood
🦐 Grilled shrimp
🥗 Summer salads
🍋 Lemon-based dishes
