Sondra’s Planning Tips
Lake Como is often associated with luxury travel, but don’t let that intimidate you.
One of the best ways to experience the lake is simply by using the public ferries, exploring smaller villages, and lingering over a cappuccino with a view.
The magic isn’t found only in five-star hotels – it’s found in slowing down and appreciating everyday moments.
Understanding Lake Como
Lake Como has a distinctive upside-down “Y” shape.
Most travelers explore the central lake, where many of the most famous villages are connected by frequent ferries.
The main towns include:
🏘️ Como
🌸 Bellagio
🚤 Varenna
🌿 Menaggio (one of my favorites)
🌊 Tremezzo
🏡 Nesso
Each offers a different experience, and it’s worth visiting more than one if time allows.
Bellagio
Often called the “Pearl of Lake Como,” Bellagio sits where the lake’s three branches meet.
Highlights include:
🌺 Villa Melzi Gardens
🛍️ Charming boutiques
🍝 Lakeside restaurants
📸 Beautiful waterfront promenades
Bellagio is one of the busiest towns on the lake, so consider arriving early in the morning or later in the afternoon to avoid peak crowds.
Varenna
If you’re looking for a quieter, more relaxed atmosphere, Varenna is a wonderful choice.
Its colorful waterfront, narrow stone lanes, and slower pace make it a favorite among independent travelers.
Don’t miss:
🌿 Villa Monastero
🚶 Passeggiata degli Innamorati (Walk of Lovers)
☕ Cozy cafés overlooking the water
Menaggio
Menaggio offers a balance between lively and laid-back. One of my host families brought me here from Gallarate (closer to Milan), and we drove to Bellaggio and took the ferry to Menaggio. Mennaggio is so much less crowded, has an incredible gelato shop, and my host families little girl was able to use her roller skates all over the place! We had a ball walking (and skating) along the water! The drive back around the lake was also stunning – they were very excited to point out George Clooney’s villa, haha.
Enjoy:
🚶 Scenic lakeside walks
⛵ Relaxed piazzas
🍷 Wine bars
🚲 Easy access to hiking and cycling routes
Tremezzo
Known for its elegant atmosphere and spectacular gardens, Tremezzo is home to one of Lake Como’s most famous villas.
Visit:
🌺 Villa Carlotta
🌴 Botanical gardens
📸 Lakeside viewpoints
Nesso
Looking for a hidden gem?
Visit Nesso.
This small village is famous for:

📷 Peaceful corners that feel untouched compared to the lake’s more famous towns.
Visit the Lake’s Historic Villas
Lake Como’s grand villas are among its most iconic attractions.
Villa del Balbianello
Perhaps the lake’s most famous villa, known for its beautiful gardens and appearances in several films.
Villa Carlotta
Renowned for its art collections and botanical gardens.
Villa Melzi
Elegant gardens with peaceful walking paths along the shoreline.
Even if you only visit one villa, you’ll gain a deeper appreciation for Lake Como’s rich history.
How to Use the Ferry System
One of the easiest – and most enjoyable – ways to explore Lake Como is by ferry.
Ferries connect many of the central lake villages, making it simple to spend the day hopping from town to town without driving.
A few tips:
⏰ Travel early during busy seasons.
🎟️ Check schedules before heading to the dock.
🪟 Sit outside whenever possible for the best views.
The ferry ride is part of the experience, not just transportation.
