Discover the Region Most Travelers Overlook

When people think about Lazio, they usually think about one city.

Rome.

And while the Eternal City is undoubtedly one of the world’s greatest destinations, it’s only one piece of a region filled with medieval villages, sparkling lakes, coastal towns, vineyards, archaeological sites, and authentic Italian communities.

Lazio is where Romans escape for weekends.

It’s where you’ll find peaceful beaches, volcanic lakes, family-run wineries, mountain villages, and charming piazzas where life moves at a slower pace.

If you’re looking to experience Italy beyond the guidebooks, Lazio is one of the country’s most rewarding regions.

Getting Around Lazio

The region is easy to explore thanks to its excellent rail network.

For:

🏛️ Rome

🌿 Cisterna di Latina

…public transportation works well.

If you plan to explore smaller villages or combine Lazio with Tuscany’s countryside, renting a car—or joining a guided regional experience—can make travel even easier.

For travelers continuing north into Tuscany, I often recommend Tuscany4Explore for authentic countryside tours, wine experiences, and visits to villages that are difficult to reach on your own.

Sondra’s Lazio Favorites

☕ Favorite Café Experience:
Order an espresso at a neighborhood café in Testaccio before exploring the local market. It’s one of the best ways to experience everyday Roman life.

🍰 Favorite Sweet Treat:
Maritozzo con la panna (mah-ree-TOHT-tsoh kohn lah PAHN-nah) — Rome’s iconic sweet bun filled with freshly whipped cream. Try one for breakfast or an afternoon pick-me-up.

🌿 Favorite Hidden Escape:
Taking the train to Cisterna di Latina, where I had the opportunity to teach English. It reminded me that some of Italy’s most meaningful experiences happen in places most tourists never visit.

🌅 Favorite Sunset Spot:
The waterfront in Sperlonga, where the whitewashed old town glows golden as the sun sets over the Tyrrhenian Sea.

Italian Phrase of the Week

“Ci vediamo presto!”

Pronunciation:

chee veh-DYAH-moh PREH-stoh

Meaning:

“See you soon!”

It’s a phrase you’ll hear often when leaving a restaurant, saying goodbye to new friends, or finishing a conversation. It perfectly captures the Italian attitude that departures are never permanent—there’s always hope you’ll meet again.

Wine of the Week

Bellone IGP Lazio

Pronunciation:

behl-LOH-neh

One of Lazio’s oldest native white grape varieties, dating back to ancient Roman times.

Flavor Notes:

  • 🍋 Citrus
  • 🍐 Pear
  • 🌼 White flowers
  • 🍯 A touch of honey as it ages

Pairs Perfectly With:

☀️ Aperitivo on a warm Roman evening

🐟 Grilled seafood

🦑 Fried calamari

🥗 Light pasta dishes
