Why Staying in a Masseria Might Be the Most Memorable Part of Your Trip to Italy
If you’ve never heard the word masseria (mahs-seh-REE-ah) before planning a trip to Puglia, you’re not alone.
Many first-time visitors focus on Puglia’s whitewashed towns and turquoise beaches – but locals will tell you that one of the most authentic ways to experience southern Italy is by staying at a masseria.
Originally fortified farmhouses dating back hundreds of years, many masserie have been lovingly restored into beautiful boutique hotels where guests can slow down, enjoy exceptional local food, and experience the countryside that makes Puglia so special.
Whether you’re planning a romantic getaway, a solo adventure, or a family vacation, there’s a masseria for every travel style and budget.

What Is a Masseria?
A masseria is a traditional fortified farmhouse found throughout southern Italy, particularly in Puglia.
Centuries ago, these estates served as working farms where families lived, produced olive oil, raised animals, and cultivated the surrounding land.
Today, many have been transformed into elegant countryside retreats that blend historic architecture with modern comforts.

💡 On My Next Visit
I’d love to spend several nights at a working olive farm during harvest season to experience the olive oil production process firsthand.
The Story Behind Puglia’s Olive Trees
One of the first things you’ll notice while driving through Puglia is the seemingly endless landscape of olive trees.
Some of these trees are more than 1,000 years old, making them living pieces of the region’s history.
In the last decade, however, Puglia has faced one of the greatest agricultural challenges in its history.
A plant disease caused by the bacterium Xylella fastidiosa, spread by tiny sap-feeding insects commonly called spittlebugs, has devastated millions of olive trees across the Salento region. Entire groves that had produced olive oil for generations were lost, dramatically changing parts of the landscape.
Today, you’ll still see these ghostly trunks as you travel through southern Puglia…a reminder of both the region’s history and the challenges its communities have faced.
The encouraging news is that farmers, researchers, and local organizations are working together to restore the landscape by:
- 🌱 Planting resistant olive varieties such as Leccino and Favolosa (FS-17)
- 🫒 Protecting centuries-old trees that remain healthy
- 🔬 Supporting scientific research into disease management
- 🌿 Diversifying crops while new groves become established
While recovery will take many years, every newly planted grove represents hope for the future of one of Italy’s most iconic landscapes.
Travel Tip: If you visit an olive oil producer, ask about their family’s experience with Xylella. Many are happy to share how they’re helping preserve Puglia’s agricultural traditions, and those conversations often become some of the most meaningful memories of a trip.
Sondra’s Packing Tip
Pack one outfit for a leisurely countryside dinner.
Many masserie have beautiful outdoor terraces where dinner becomes an event in itself, especially at sunset.
From My Travels
One of the things that stood out to me most in Puglia was the contrast between its charming towns and peaceful countryside.
After a day of exploring places like Lecce or the Nardò area, returning to the quiet of the olive groves felt like exhaling. Those slower moments are part of what makes Puglia so unforgettable.
Why I Love Masserie
Hotels can be beautiful.
But masserie tell a story.
When you stay in one, you’re surrounded by history, local traditions, and landscapes that have shaped life in Puglia for centuries.
It’s the kind of experience that stays with you long after you’ve unpacked your suitcase.
