Cisterna di Latina

A Personal Favorite Hidden Gem

Travel Time:

🚆 About 1 hour from Rome

Best For:

Travelers wanting authentic Italy

Local experiences

Hidden gems

Cisterna di Latina is the kind of place many tourists never discover.

And that is exactly why it is special. A quick train ride from Rome, I spent a week in this tiny little city teaching English and I made friends for life!

Away from the crowds of Rome, visitors can experience a more everyday side of Italy:

☕ Local cafés

🍝 Traditional restaurants

🏘️ Small-town atmosphere

🌿 Lazio countryside

One of the best parts of traveling through Italy is discovering places that are meaningful not because they appear on every list—but because they create memories.

Cisterna di Latina represents that slower, more personal side of Italy.

Pescara

The Adriatic Coast Escape

Travel Time:

🚆 Approximately 3 hours from Rome

Region:

Abruzzo

Best For:

Beach lovers

Seafood

Summer travel

While technically outside Lazio, Pescara makes a wonderful extension from Rome for travelers who want to experience Italy’s Adriatic coast.

Pescara offers:

🌊 Long beaches

🐟 Fresh seafood

🚲 Coastal bike paths

🌅 Relaxed evenings

Unlike Italy’s famous coastal destinations, Pescara feels more local and less overwhelming. It was my home for 2 weeks in the summer with an incredible family and even more incredible memories (anyone remember the guy who took me on a date and had the itinerary on his iPad for it?)!

It is a great reminder that Italy’s coastline extends far beyond the famous names.

Wine & Countryside Experiences Near Rome

For travelers who want to experience Italian countryside without worrying about transportation, guided experiences can be a great option.

A trusted local option for exploring Italian villages, countryside, and wine regions is:

Tuscany4Explore

Their approach focuses on helping travelers experience authentic local areas, rather than simply checking destinations off a list.

For travelers combining Rome with Tuscany, this can be especially helpful for wine regions and countryside experiences where public transportation is limited.

Best Rome Day Trips By Car

Having a car opens up even more possibilities.

Orvieto

A Hilltop Umbrian Gem

Travel Time:

About 1.5 hours

Although located in Umbria, Orvieto is one of the most rewarding escapes from Rome.

Santa Marinella

A Quick Beach Escape

A simple coastal getaway when you need sea air without leaving central Italy.

Best Day Trips From Rome for Solo Travelers

Ostia Antica

Interesting and comfortable alone.

Frascati

Perfect for food and wine.

Cisterna di Latina

For travelers who want authentic Italy.

Pescara

For a longer coastal adventure.

Sondra’s Tips

Tip #1: Don’t Overpack Your Day

Italian towns are meant to be enjoyed slowly.

Choose fewer stops.

Stay longer.

Tip #2: Use Rome as a Base

You do not need to change hotels every night.

Rome’s connections make it easy to explore.

Tip #3: Go Beyond the Famous Places

Some of Italy’s best memories happen in towns you almost skipped.

Sondra’s Perfect Rome Day Trip

My ideal day:

☕ Morning coffee in a small town

🏛️ Explore historic streets

🍝 Long lunch

🍷 Local wine

🌅 Sunset before returning to Rome
