I’ve been in a real cleansing mood lately. There have a been a lot of crazy changes to my relationship(s), my social calendar, and my health, and in an effort to adjust I’m trying to catch up on all of the things I’ve been meaning to get to (like piles of laundry that can never get done because until a week ago our dryer took literally 8-12 hours to dry a load), and take more time to connect with myself on a deeper level.
My living space, my car, my work backpack…I feel like everything needs to be more organized, and more tranquil. As the season changes (not that you’d know from the 82 degree weather here in San Diego), I’ve been trying to incorporate more self-care into my routine, and really stick to it.
I know I can’t be the only one who lets self care take a backseat to this grand thing we call life, so I thought, why not share some of my “baby steps” back into self care for other babes who may be struggling like me?
Spruce Up Your Space:
We all have different ideas of what this means. It could be new bedding (you can even just get a new seasonal throw blanket or accent pillow!), burning a candle, organizing those messy bookshelves or shoe racks or undie drawers, or taking an extra minute to make your bed every day!
Me personally? I burn a candle whenever I’m in my room, and I’m working on being better at making the bed before I head out for the day. I’m not saying its Pinterest-perfect, but my bed is the first thing I see when I walk into my bedroom door and seeing it made and having it smelling fresh makes a big difference in winding down after 12-16 hours of work or a night out on the town! I also spritz it with my favorite Febreze spray every time I make it, and use a lavender pillow spray! I also close the closet doors so I’m not looking at all the craziness in there when I could be chilling out!
Spend Time on Skincare:
Maybe you only have a few spare minutes (pretty much literally) to do something special for yourself. Try a quick and easy sheet mask like this cool new bubble one from GlamGlow! You may have recently seen me sporting it on Instagram, and it only stays on for 3 minutes! Get your face damp, apply it, and three minutes later you rub in the excess on your face and rinse! Easy, and effective for detoxing, refining, and refreshing that gorgeous face of yours!
Got a little more time? I love these Korean sheet masks! You get 24 of them for less than $10, and it’s something you can do daily, or even just start with 1-2 times a week to give yourself a little something extra! Pro Tip: Apply the excess serum in the pouch and pat into your face, neck and décolletage before you toss it out. Solid gold, y’all.
Make time in your morning and evening routine to remove that makeup, apply that eye cream (why did no one stress the importance of eye cream in my youth?), or actually brushing those pearly whites for two whole minutes. Create your own routine and stick to every step! You deserve to start and end your day with consistency and self care! And don’t forget that sunscreen…ALWAYS!
Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate:
I go back and forth between being really good and really bad at this. It’s hard to get enough water when you’re stuck at a desk and have a bladder the size of a walnut (unconfirmed exaggeration), but man do I see a difference when I do!
I make this easier using a dedicated water bottle (I love this one I’ve had for two years now) or cup with a lid/straw, and I add a drop of lemon essential oil (only if you’re using a glass or metal container!), or 1 or 2 scoops of Vital Proteins Collagen Peptides or Vital Proteins Collagen Beauty Water packets
I love the unflavored collagen because it really doesn’t make my water taste funny, and I’ve seen significant improvement in my hair, skin, nails AND belly bloating since I’ve started using it. I recommended it to several co-workers and my mom and they all use it now, too! And when I need to change things up, the beauty water packets come in a few different flavors to choose from!
Stay a Step Ahead:
There are little things I like to do to stay a step ahead.
As of late, I lay my pajamas out when I make the bed, so when I get home they’re fresh and ready for me. I’m obsessed with pretty, comfy pj’s and its nice to slip into them and embrace that comfort. I pack my food for work on my first day back, and eat from it throughout the work week, and I keep snack options in my locker to keep me from running to 7-11 and eating with my eyes instead of zoning in on my actual food needs.
Some other things that help?
Make your meals the night before work, instead of rushing before heading out the door.
Order your groceries online and free up more time to meal prep, with services like Amazon Fresh (they offer a 30 day FREE trial)!
When I’m getting ready to travel, I also try to compile a list of what I’ll need (and check the weather in my destination) to start packing little by little, rather than rushing at the last minute to get everything ready. My “personal item” is always locked and loaded with my travel essentials, too, so it’s ready to go whenever and the basics I keep in there are never unpacked!
Take a Moment:
Take a bath. Read a book. Take a walk. Sit in the jacuzzi. Jump in the pool. Water your garden. Make a smoothie. Bake some cookies. Work on your needlepoint. Get a coloring book. Write someone a real letter. Call your Grandma. Journal for 15 minutes. Play dress up. Make a 5 song playlist and take a dance break (bonus points if you’re like me and do this while playing dress up).
Point is, you need to make time to do something you can’t find the time to do anymore! Set a timer if you have to, but make space for things that stimulate your mind and make you happy! And do it just because.
What are you going to do to spend more time on self care? I want to know in the comments! And you don’t have to go off of my list! Tell me what you do, or want to start doing! I wanna hear all about it!
